Tips for Beginning Golfers

by Dr. Michael Kalisman MD

While Golf sometimes holds a reputation as a leisure sport, it is actually a complex game with many intricacies. For this reason, many beginners become easily frustrated. Below, I’ve provided a few tips that may assist the novice in developing a sustainable skill set.

First, try to remember that your golf tee’s position is of paramount importance. Always align the ball so that a minimum of half of its surface is in close proximity to the face of the club.

Although it may take longer, attempt to develop a homogenous swinging method. The rate at which your club swings forward and back should be as close to equal as you can achieve. This may seem silly in beginning courses, but as you take on more difficult obstacles, it will let you focus on tactics.

Vision goes a long way. Especially in the beginning, when you may not possess a great deal of confidence, make a practice of imagining your shot going exactly where you want it to: across the green and into the hole. Think of this as you gear-up and while you swing.

If you’re having difficulties hitting the ball straight, try decreasing your hitting speed until you gain more control. This may result in a lot of short shots, but the practice is invaluable.

Consider hiring a coach. They can help you customize your technique and remove any habitual weaknesses. It is important to nip any bad tendencies in the bud; if you continue playing with them, they could become detrimental.
